Summer Fun: A Splash of Color & Coastal Vibes | An Artist Spotlight Collaboration

It’s been exciting to learn about the amazing artists in our community through The Artist Spotlight Program, and we’re thrilled to bring you more inspiration by celebrating individuals in the Paint Pour Academy (PPA) community. This is our monthly Artist Spotlight Collaboration, where we challenge the artists with an Inspired theme and let them pour! Our goal is to inspire you and your art through these themed challenges and share the wealth of knowledge, skill, and artist stylings of our spotlight artists.

We’re keeping it simple and allowing the participating artists full creative control with a theme-featured challenge. Here’s what we asked them to do:

Let your creativity ride the wave with our next Artist Spotlight collaboration: “Summer Fun!” This month, we’re soaking up the season with art inspired by beach scenes, bold colors, and joyful summer activities. Whether you’re dreaming of salty air and ocean waves, a tropical getaway, or playful poolside afternoons, this theme is all about capturing the energy, warmth, and carefree spirit of summertime.

Bring your brightest palette, your favorite fluid art technique, and a splash of sunshine to your canvas. Think: beach towels, popsicles, waves, sunsets, sand, or even a floaty in the pool. It’s time to pour some summer magic!

Color Suggestions (if needed):

  • Pops of Lime Green or Sunset Purple
  • Turquoise, Aqua, Ocean Blue
  • Sunshine Yellow, Coral, Flamingo Pink
  • Sandy Beige, White, and Tropical Orange

And here’s what they came up with:

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I grew up summers at the beach, and have sooooo many fond memories of family and friends there. So, this swipe seemed perfect for this challenge. What better way to get the ocean and sunset sky than with a swipe.

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
The first piece, I had a bit much pillow poking through on the ocean side, but it was still very pretty. So I did a second piece using the same technique and this one was perfect! However, In true Joyce fashion…I forgot to hit the record button on the second one!!! UGH!!!

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
I love the little bits of sky color peeking through in the ocean side, as if they are reflcting from the sky.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
Good palette knives are a must for this technique, a larger one for the main swipes, then a smaller one for the horizon line. Then of course a cake spinner to open the painting up.

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
Paint what you love, and how it makes you happy.

  • Canvas (or substrate) size. 6×6 inch tile

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I wanted to take the next logical step from doing canyon swipes to doing a tree swipe

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
It was a lot of color for a small substrate, but I wanted to use them all – so I did. I wish I had done some more enhancement on the tree, but I still think it works in as an abstract tree suggestion.

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
The way the colors blended to suggest the colors of a hot summer sunset – my favorite time of day of the summer season.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
Just a palette knife

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
I’m glad I did this on a small substrate so I could identify what I’ll do differently in the future. I’m excited to now try it on a larger canvas

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
The shape of the bowl, the S.D.G. intricate layering process of colors & the Artist Spotlight theme is what inspired this “beachy” application !

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
I am almost always pouring over clear Glass & with this large piece the Glass was green. Pouring over Glass is very unpredictable so making sure the outside colors complimented the green Glass inside was quite challenging !

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
Again the shape of this beautiful bowl lent to the beautiful patterns of this gorgeous pour !

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
Stacy.Does.Glass. Advanced Techniques & custom blend applications are what made this pour so beautiful !

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
I have been studying the intricacies of pouring over Glass for the last three years. Take the time to get to know your area of expertise in every way possible – there are no short cuts.

  • Paint Pouring technique(s) used. Traveling Tree Ring
  • Canvas (or substrate) size. 16″x20″ stretched canvas

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I wanted to create an ocean scene but I did not want to do another one like I have in the past with the swipe technique. I selected some blues and silver paint for the water and for the sky, I selected warmer colors for a sunset look.

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
My sky turned out too orange and I lost alot of the yellow and red colors while tilting. I decided to add a quote in the sky to help balance it out a bit.

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
The water area! I loved using the silver instead of white for the ocean accents.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
My dixie cups to help lift the one side of the canvas so the other side can sit on the table and let the paint travel as I poured it.

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
Have fun with the process! If it doesn’t work out, keep going and alter if needed.
