Can you tell us a bit about your background as an artist? How did you first get started with paint pouring?

With a background of many Artisans & Craftsman all through our family lineage, I am a natural born Artist. I started painting & drawing at age five. Both my Sister & I were Artists, so my family was very nurturing with our talents, encouraging them every step of the way. When I had children, my Daughter had gotten the gift & is a Fine Artist, Sculptor & Glassblower.

My Professional career spans over 36 years. I spent the first 15 as a Corporate Design Manager for Fortune 100 Design Departments, ultimately heading up Design & Promotion for Campbell Soup. I had finally left the corporate world to start a family & by necessity, wound up teaching, mentoring, training & preparing artistically gifted children, such as my Daughter, for college & careers in the Art Industry. This was all started & still continues today in my thriving home Studio & that was 10 years ago!

I discovered Fluid Art while getting my Life Coaching Certification, while my Studio was shut down during Covid. I was blown away!!! I quickly mastered all of the Fluid Art techniques and went on to discover my love for pouring over Glass. That’s how “Stacy.Does.Glass.” was born!

What draws you to the medium of paint pouring? What do you enjoy most about it?

As a Fine Artist fluent in many mediums such as pencil, painting with watercolor & acrylic, pastels (both chalk & oil), and felt tip, I was used to total control of the medium. With Paint Pouring, all of that goes out the window! You are constantly trying to control the uncontrollable – and that is VERY exciting!!!

Describe your creative process when approaching a new paint pouring project. Do you plan your compositions in advance, or do you prefer to let the process guide you?

Although I still love to paint on canvas quite often, my main area of focus is my Glass work. I’m constantly experimenting with new ideas, products, and different combinations of things to get the amazing patterns & finishes that my Glass pieces have become known for. This process usually starts with an interesting piece of Glass!

I frequent second-hand shops, thrift stores & yard sales and always keep an interesting inventory on-hand. The particular piece I choose will dictate to me how I approach it, and there is really never a plan or formula. Every piece is done differently depending on the size, shape, details of the piece, and the special effects that I am going for.

Do you frequently use specific techniques or methods in your paint pouring work? Could you walk us through one of your favorite techniques?

The methods used on Glass are very different from the methods used on canvas. When applying paint on Glass – it is extremely challenging because everything wants to slide right off! So, getting the kinds of patterns and pioneering the use of Micas/Pigments on Glass is something I am very proud of. The application of Micas/Pigments on Glass was a technique & category that I had created that did not exist & had never been done before on Facebook. One of my favorite applications is another technique that I had created, which is hand layering Micas/Pigments on Glass.

What inspires your artistic style and choice of colors? Do any particular themes or motifs recur in your work?

Everything inspires me, and I just LOVE COLOR! It could be something I see in nature, a piece of beautiful fabric, a photograph or just something I dream up in my imagination. Also – I really love a challenge, which is why I fell so in love with pouring on Glass! Getting beautiful patterns on Glass with separated colors is so challenging & that’s why I’m always pushing the envelope & creating new techniques & applications.

Can you share a memorable experience or a significant breakthrough moment you’ve had in your paint pouring journey?

Yes – I have two….The first time is when I had successfully applied Micas/Pigments on Glass. It took me nearly two years of testing different formulas, products, and combinations of formulas & products and many, many a trial & error, but I stuck with it and eventually started getting the kinds of results I was looking for!

Second – Was the discovery that my Glass pieces were just as beautiful on the inside as they were on the outside!  Many of my open concept pieces such as bowls, the views can appreciated from both inside and outside of the piece.

How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges when working on a project?

I rarely have creative blocks; my challenge is more so choosing one of the many ideas that are on my ongoing list of things I’d love to try & experiment with!

However, I do have to be careful with burnout. My Studio is REALLY busy, and because most of my Students/Clients are planning on Artistic careers, both Students & Parents really rely on me to navigate many important things in addition to their Artistic training.

Things such as college prep, portfolios & college applications. I am very proud to say that all of my graduates have gotten into one of the top 5 Art Colleges here in the U.S. & all of them with scholarships. Somewhere in between classes, I have my own personal artwork to get done, a family and a household to take care of & managing my Facebook page, not only content but editing videos. It gets to be overwhelming sometimes, and every once in a while, I have to take a few steps back to catch my breath!

Do you have any favorite tools or materials that you always keep in your paint pouring arsenal? What are they, and why do you love them?

I love my Micas and pigments! Whether combined with each other or coupled with regular high-end acrylics, the possibilities are endless—especially on Glass!

How do you know when a paint pouring piece is finished? What criteria do you use to evaluate your work?

It’s a funny thing as a natural born Artist – you just “know” it’s a  “knowing”, and it’s always been there for me.

What advice would you give to aspiring paint pouring artists who are just starting out?

Experiment! Try things out! Try anything & EVERYTHING that you are curious about! Don’t take other people’s words for it. There is nothing like trying things out for yourself and making so many surprise discoveries along the way!

Lastly, where can we find more of your work or connect with you online?

As I mentioned earlier, I own and operate a very busy Art Studio where I teach and sell my work. My Business and students come first, so currently, my only social media platform is Facebook. You can find and follow me @Stacy Polidoro or Stacy Does.Glass.

  3. I learned that “Knowing” when a piece of art was finished was when I asked myself what I could do next to improve it! That, in itself, tells you that it is finished!! It was a valuable lesson!
