Artist Spotlight Collaborations

Love in Every Hue | An Artist Spotlight Collaboration

It’s been exciting to learn about the amazing artists in our community through The Artist Spotlight Program, and we’re thrilled to bring you more inspiration by celebrating individuals in the Paint Pour Academy (PPA) community. This is our monthly Artist Spotlight Collaboration, where we challenge the artists with an Inspired theme and let them pour! Our goal is to inspire you and your art through these themed challenges and share the wealth of knowledge, skill, and artist stylings of our spotlight artists.

February is a month bursting with meaning—celebrating love, unity, and heritage in all its beautiful forms. Join us as we embrace the vibrant spirit of the month with “Love in Every Hue”, a theme designed to inspire creativity, connection, and joy.

This month, we’re inviting you to create art that reflects the beauty of diversity and togetherness using a rainbow of colors to symbolize love and inclusion in all its forms. The spectrum of hues represents the different yet interconnected parts of humanity, each one unique and essential, blending into a harmonious whole.

To bring this theme to life, we’re focusing on the Swipe Technique, a dynamic and versatile method in fluid art. Let the colors flow across your canvas, creating captivating patterns and blending transitions that echo the unity and movement of love. The Swipe Technique is perfect for creating dramatic effects and showcasing the endless possibilities of color.

Theme Details:

  • Colors: Use a Rainbow of Colors to celebrate diversity, love, and unity. Let your imagination guide you—create vibrant transitions or bold contrasts as your heart desires!
  • Technique: Swipe Technique. Explore different swipe tools and methods to blend the rainbow into stunning compositions. Experiment with traditional swipes, radial swipes, or layered effects to tell your story.

Let’s inspire each other to spread love and celebrate the beauty of connection through our art. Share your finished pieces to spark joy and creativity within the community!

And here’s what they came up with:

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I have had this idea for a while now, but on a much larger scale. So I took this project as a perfect opportunity to do a test run to work out any links. It turned out to be very helpful and I know now what I like and what I didn’t like so much.

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
I struggled a little with over stretching the lacing. I learned, through rewatching during editing, that I am anchoring the lacing to the side to soon, which is causing the over stretching. I need to slow down and really look at where everything is and what the best way to tilt the paint off, to save more of my composition and lacing.

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
I love the contrast between the black/silver/white background with the bright and vibrant colored swipes. I also love how the lacing almost looks electric in many places.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
My palette knives and of course the Australian Floetrol the creates such incredible lacing.

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
When you are unsure of a technique, or color combination, do a smaller test piece. Also, record yourself. Even if no one ever sees the video. By watching what you did over again, it can be very helpful and informative. It allows you to pinpoint things you can improve on and things you need to keep doing because they are successful.

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I wanted to take the difficulty of pouring on Glass to a whole new level. This was one of the most difficult & advanced pours I have ever done on Glass.

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
The intricate hand layering of the paints & custom blends along with the chameleon custom gold overlay was very challenging.

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
Love the layering of rainbow colors beneath the custom chameleon overlay – I’m so happy I was able to pull that off ! I also added subtle touches of glittered mica which was another custom formulation.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
There were several combinations of custom blends that I have never used before especially on Glass. It took a great deal of experimentation to get the formulations just right. I also used glitter, a palette knife & a small sponge as part of my application process for the very first time.

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
Proper paints best suited for Glass are very important. They will be very different than what works best on canvas. Experiment & spend the most time on your consistencies, that’s what is most challenging.

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
We were given the challenge to use the swipe technique. I chose a radial swipe because I felt it would lend interest to the piece and allow the colors to blend in an interesting way.

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
This was only the second time I had ever done a radial swipe! I love a good challenge and felt like it would look beautiful on this piece .

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
The pearl paint colors are definitely the star of this show! I love how vibrant they look and how the cells have multiple colors in them. It gives the work so much interest and uniqueness.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
Couldn’t have done it without a pallet knife for swiping and my cake spinner.

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
Don’t be afraid to experiment with new techniques and new paints! Every try is a learning opportunity.

  • Canvas (or substrate) size. Wood signs

About the Project

What inspired the techniques used in your piece?
I purchased some wood signs last year and I thought this was a great time to use them!

What challenges did you have completing this piece?
I used paint that I mixed up about 3-4 weeks ago. When I opened them up, they were very thick so I added Elmer’s Glue (I ran out of Floetrol and forgot to go shopping, lol!) and a splash of water to get them back to consistency. When the pieces dried, they cracked and crazed which gave a distressed and worn look to them. At first I was so disappointed but after I got over the shock, I LOVE THEM!

I also had a hard time swiping over the letter cutouts in the signs. Next time, I will use a paper towel, when is more flexible than the resin spreader I was using.

Do you have a favorite part or element in this artwork?
I love the end result.

Are there any specific tools or materials that you found particularly helpful in this project?
I thought these signs were fun to use =o)

Do you have any tips to share with the readers?
Have fun with the process! If it doesn’t work out, keep going and alter if needed.
