
If you’ve ever dealt with bubbles in resin, you know the panic. Last night I fell down a rabbit hole in a resin Facebook group. Someone had posted a photo of a cup full of bubbly resin, asking for help before it started to cure. Within a few hours, she had well over a hundred comments.
Vacuum chambers. Heat guns. Lighters. Torches. Hair dryers. Warm baths. Cold baths. Spritzing with alcohol. Not spritzing with alcohol. Stirring slower. Stirring faster. Stirring with your hands instead of a tool (I wish I were kidding). Someone even suggested pouring yourself a drink and trying again….
Here’s the thing: some of that advice was genuinely good. Some of it was outdated. And a little of it was the kind of thing that could actually hurt you or ruin your piece. If you’ve ever mixed a cup of resin, watched it fog up with bubbles, and panicked while scrolling for answers, I want to save you the hundred-comment scroll. Here’s what actually works, what’s worth skipping, and how to keep this from happening in the first place.
If You Already Have Bubbles in Resin Right Now
If your resin is mixed and sitting in the cup, bubbly and cloudy, don’t panic. Bubbles in resin are normal, especially right after mixing. Here’s what to actually do:
Let it rest. This is the most underrated fix in resin art. Most of those bubbles are just trapped air from stirring, and a lot of them will rise and pop on their own if you give the resin a few minutes before you pour. Five to ten minutes is a good starting point, longer if your resin has a long working time.
Spritz with 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol. This is genuinely one of the best tools you have. A light spritz on the surface of the resin, in the cup or after it’s in the mold, breaks the surface tension and pops bubbles. Go light, though. You don’t need to soak it.
Use gentle heat, carefully. A heat gun held a few inches above the surface (not touching it) can help bubbles rise and pop. If you don’t have one, a hair dryer on low works for a gentler version of the same effect. Heat thins the resin slightly, which helps trapped air escape.
Tap the container. Before you pour, give your mixing cup a few taps on the counter. It sounds too simple to work, but agitating the resin this way really does help bubbles rise.

What’s Worth Trying (With a Few Honest Caveats)
Vacuum chambers. These pull bubbles out mechanically and can work really well, especially for pieces where clarity matters a lot. They’re also an investment, and not something every beginner needs to start out. If you’re just getting into resin, this isn’t a required tool.
Warming your resin and hardener before mixing. Several people in that thread swore by warming both parts in a water bath before combining them. This does work; warm resin is thinner, which lets bubbles escape more easily while you mix. Just know it also shortens your working time, sometimes significantly. If you go this route, work in smaller batches so you’re not rushing.
Mixing slowly. This one gets repeated for a reason. Fast, aggressive stirring is one of the biggest causes of bubbles in the first place. Slow and steady really does make a difference.
Advice I’d Skip
Open flame near your resin. A few people suggested using a lighter or torch directly over the resin. I’d steer clear of this, especially as a beginner. Resin is flammable, mistakes happen fast, and a heat gun does the same job without the risk.
Microwaving your resin. I saw this suggested as a quick way to warm resin before pouring, and I’d steer clear of it completely. Microwaves heat unevenly, and resin can overheat fast, which risks scorching it, causing it to cure too quickly, or even releasing fumes you don’t want to breathe in. A warm water bath does the same job safely, it just takes a few more minutes. And whatever you do, don’t reheat your lunch in that same microwave afterward.
“Just keep stirring until it’s clear.” Over-stirring is more likely to introduce new bubbles than remove the ones you already have. If your resin isn’t clearing up, the fix isn’t more stirring, it’s rest time, gentle heat, or alcohol.
Skipping the resting step because you’re in a hurry. I get it, waiting is the hardest part. But rushing your pour before the resin has had time to settle is one of the most common reasons beginners end up with a piece full of bubbles.

How to Prevent Bubbles Next Time
The advice that actually holds up, no matter which resin brand you use, comes down to a few consistent habits for avoiding bubbles in resin:
- Mix slowly and scrape the sides and bottom of your cup so nothing is left unmixed
- Let your mixed resin rest for a few minutes before pouring
- Pour slowly, in a thin stream, rather than dumping it all at once
- Spritz with alcohol after pouring, and again a few minutes later if you still see bubbles
- Work in a warm room. Cold resin holds onto bubbles more stubbornly than warm resin does
None of this requires fancy equipment. It just requires a little patience, which I know is easier said than done when you’re excited to see your piece finished.
