Can you tell us a bit about your background as an artist? How did you first get started with paint pouring?
I became interested in art as I was an empty nester and had too much time on my hands! I started painting with acrylics on wood, glass, etc. Then, I watched a fluid art video on YouTube and was quickly addicted. I went to a local art store for supplies, and I had this feeling of peace & excitement at the same time.
What draws you to the medium of paint pouring? What do you enjoy most about it?
I am drawn to the medium of paint pouring as I find it very freeing; the possibilities are endless. I enjoy the whole process, from mixing my colors, prepping my canvas, pouring, embellishing & finishing with resin or varnish.
Describe your creative process when approaching a new paint pouring project. Do you plan your compositions in advance, or do you prefer to let the process guide you?
I first think of the technique I will be doing, however I tend to mix techniques in a pour. I may have an idea, but I am flexible and will let the process flow and see where it goes. If I am doing a commission, I will plan it out.
Do you frequently use specific techniques or methods in your paint pouring work? Could you walk us through one of your favorite techniques?
I tend to go in spurts, doing a lot of one technique with various color palettes. One of my favorite techniques is a swipe. I do think of where I want to place a swipe, whether I want to load my pallet knife or put the colors on the canvas. How you lay the colors does matter, and it will change depending on if you want all the colors to show or one color to be dominant.

What inspires your artistic style and choice of colors? Do any particular themes or motifs recur in your work?
I tend to gravitate towards blues and greens. I challenge myself to use pinks, purples & reds. I do love using a deep Crimson! I get inspiration from all around me. Nature definitely influences me, but I have been inspired to use colors I see in clothes and home furnishings. Yes, feathers, snake and dragon scales!
Can you share a memorable experience or a significant breakthrough moment you’ve had in your paint pouring journey?
I was fortunate to attend Fluid Art Co. PourCon in Las Vegas a year ago. It was an amazing experience to be around so many like-minded people. I met amazing and talented artists who shared their knowledge and passion and inspired me to push myself in my art journey. A big breakthrough personally & professionally for me was to start sharing my art on Facebook and YouTube.

How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges when working on a project?
If I am feeling a creative block, I fight through it in a few ways. I will just pick colors to mix and see what comes to mind. If I have colors already mixed, I will do a ring pour just to get creating. Or I will start cleaning my studio, and sometimes, I find a tool that I haven’t used in a while, which sparks an idea!
Do you have any favorite tools or materials that you always keep in your paint pouring arsenal? What are they, and why do you love them?
Oh, I have a lot of pallet knives; they are very versatile. I collect combs & picks to wreck my pours. I use the pallet knives mostly for swiping, or adding on a design. The combs I like to wreck a pour with and dotting tools are great for adding sassy swirls. A tip I will share is I have a lazy Susan on my table, full of supplies: pallet knives, combs, baby wipes, tweezers, gloves, etc.
How do you know when a paint pouring piece is finished? What criteria do you use to evaluate your work?
A paint pouring project is finished when I feel satisfied with the composition of the piece. My criteria is, “would I like to hang it in my home”?
What advice would you give to aspiring paint pouring artists who are just starting out?
My advice to an aspiring paint pouring artist is to just start! I learn more from doing than just watching. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! I recommend watching videos & asking questions, join a group & be open to suggestions.
Also, don’t be afraid to put your own spin on a technique! You can follow the guidelines of a technique, but be open to doing your own thing, too! Most importantly, have fun!

Are there any upcoming projects, exhibitions, or collaborations you’re excited about and would like to share with our readers?
I am creating a short video for our local sheriff’s department to help raise money for the ” Give A Kid a Christmas” telethon. I also participate in a monthly Facebook collaboration with Kymskreations and other amazing artists.
Lastly, where can we find more of your work or connect with you online?
