Artist Spotlight: Kym at Kymkreations
Art has a way of connecting people, inspiring creativity, and opening doors to new possibilities. For Kym of KymKreations, fluid art became more than just a creative hobby—it became a journey filled with learning, experimentation, and meaningful connections within the artistic community. Through each new project, she continues to discover fresh ideas, develop her skills, and share her passion with others. In this Artist Spotlight, Kym shares her artistic journey, favorite techniques, and the experiences that continue to inspire her creativity.

I then started painting young, but an art teacher was teaching totally different forms, and I wasn’t interested, so I quit for years. I think it was around 2019 when I picked up my brushes again. And oh, then I saw a video on YouTube that was acrylic paint pours and fell in love. And I found a way to treat my PTSD and extreme anxiety. Best therapist Ever.
Well, for years, I was painting wood with inspiring or just insanely funny quotes on them. Like up above, I found it on YouTube and was instantly hooked.
What draws you to the medium of paint pouring? What do you enjoy most about it?
That’s a confusing question. If you mean how I figured out what mediums worked for me, it was a lot of trial and error. Once I found my recipe, I’ve used it ever since.
Honestly, I love every single thing, but I guess it’s watching all the different designs the pour makes itself. You never really know how many people can see so many different things in it.

Describe your creative process when approaching a new paint pouring project. Do you plan your compositions in advance, or do you prefer to let the process guide you?
Well, I guess I have an idea of what I want, so with that in mind, I then try picking out colors that don’t clash together and ruin it. And then, I decide which technique I want to try. Which isn’t easy with so many different techniques, and I want to try them all.
Do I plan my composition in advance? That’s a tough question 😂 I always have a layout I want, but the pour can sometimes take over and look better than my own design.

Do you frequently use specific techniques or methods in your paint pouring work? Could you walk us through one of your favorite techniques?
My favorite used to be the Dutch pour, but since I started the monthly challenges/collaborations on my page, I’ve found myself trying all different techniques. It all depends on where the wheel lands on the spin.
I also found mixing paints just as therapeutic, so my paints are always mixed. I will normally cover up the back of my canvas and tape it around all four sides.
Then comes the color choices. There are more times than not that I don’t even try for a specific design. With Dutch pour, it’s the easiest for me since it’s laying down the paints on the canvas. I get out the hairdryer and just go with it.
What inspires your artistic style and choice of colors? Do any particular themes or motifs recur in your work?
Hmm 🤔. My inspiration, I guess, is how I’m feeling that day. On some days, I don’t even really pick anything because I end up making an angry pour. But as far as Dutch, I love trying to create different ways with it. Colors play a big part in that since all colors will mix.
Recurring themes? It’s funny you should ask that because I was just talking to someone recently about it. Yes, I have paintings that I used to call Fire and Ice. But now faces are showing up, which I now call my good vs. evil. I don’t particularly see what others see. My go-to colors are black, white, red, and blue. So I do still try fire and ice; it just depends on the pour, I guess.
Can you share a memorable experience or a significant breakthrough moment you’ve had in your paint pouring journey?
When I realized for the first time that I could do more than string pulls, it truly changed my life.
How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges when working on a project?
If it’s something I’ve never tried before, I usually start watching my followers on my page to see how they do it. Once I see one I truly like, I’ll try it out.

Do you have any favorite tools or materials that you always keep in your paint pouring arsenal? What are they, and why do you love them?
It is definitely a hair dryer; my spinner is always on hand. I also love using skewers to make my squiggles. Why do I love them? They’ve always been a part of my painting journey.
How do you know when a paint pouring piece is finished? What criteria do you use to evaluate your work?
I sit back and look at it, walk away, come back, and look again. I usually let a couple of really talented artists in, and I don’t forget my mom, who sees things no one else will ever see. They usually give me a bit of advice.

What advice would you give to aspiring paint pouring artists who are just starting out?
Hmm 🤔. The first thing is don’t start with perfect expectations; try a couple of different techniques to see which works best for you.
Do not watch a thousand YouTube videos, please; start with just one or two that do the techniques you’re interested in.
The most important advice I can honestly give is to just have fun with it.
Are there any upcoming projects, exhibitions, or collaborations you’re excited about and would like to share with our readers?
I have monthly challenges/collaborations on my page, and everyone is invited. Each person gives me two colors, a base color and a dominant color, with a back-to-basics technique. I spin a wheel live at the end of the month, and whoever the wheel stops on colors gets to use my timeline for a whole month to promote their business or beginners to share their own art. It’s a blast to try different techniques and see how so many people come out using the exact same colors and techniques. It’s on my Facebook page at Kymskreations.
Lastly, where can we find more of your work or connect with you online?
Well, Kymkreations is a public place so that you can find some of my art there, but there are so many other talented artists there, too. To connect with me, either send me a message on Messenger or email me. There’s always my YouTube channel; it’s not just my art, though.
