Every artist’s creative journey begins with a spark of curiosity, and for Adrian Fullerwinder and Cory Lehman of Art’s Really Cool, that spark quickly grew into a shared passion. What started as an interest in the unique possibilities of paint pouring eventually became a creative partnership built on experimentation, encouragement, and artistic growth.

In this Artist Spotlight, Adrian and Cory share how they discovered fluid art, the techniques they enjoy most, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Can you tell us a bit about your background as an artist? How did you first get started with paint pouring?

I, Cory Lehman, saw a video on YouTube of Molly from Molly’s Artistry doing a colander pour. I thought it was so cool and loved how unique and different every painting came out. I went on to try it myself and became slightly obsessed. After a while, I ran into some hard times and stopped pouring. That’s when Adrian comes in.

I, Adrian Fullerwinder, noticed Cory’s cool painting scattered all over his house when I moved in with him. I asked about the paintings, which then led him to introduce me to paint pouring. We did a few together for fun, and the obsession began for me.

After Cory began to paint pour more frequently, his friend asked for a commissioned piece from him. Cory then went to work to make a one-of-a-kind piece for his friend. This really pushed him to start taking it more seriously. Around that time, Adrian was beginning his journey into recovery from substance abuse. Painting pouring became a way of therapy and a healthy escape for him. After about 10 or so successful pieces, we collectively decided to take it more seriously and to start our own paint pouring business.

What draws you to the medium of paint pouring? What do you enjoy most about it?

Cory: The designs and the absolute uniqueness of every painting. It’s almost impossible to duplicate, and I think that’s beautiful.

Adrian: I love the freedom that it gives you. You can go in with one idea and then accidentally do something else that can be a pleasant surprise.

Describe your creative process when approaching a new paint pouring project. Do you plan your compositions in advance, or do you prefer to let the process guide you?

A little bit of both. We typically have a rough plan before we pour. But it normally doesn’t turn out exactly as we want. So it’s about 30% planning and 70% luck.

Do you frequently use specific techniques or methods in your paint pouring work? Could you walk us through one of your favorite techniques?

Cory: Dutch Pour: I really like the wispiness you get from this technique. I love to see how the difference in your source of air can change the shape, softness, and style of each blowout.

Adrian: Swipes: I like to choose colors that complement each other before I swipe through them. The longer the swipe, the better. Sometimes, a bit of a zigzag pattern creates cooler and more interesting webbing.

What inspires your artistic style and choice of colors? Do any particular themes or motifs recur in your work?

Cory: Metallics, blues, and shifts, oh my!

Adrian: All green, every day!

Can you share a memorable experience or a significant breakthrough moment you’ve had in your paint pouring journey?

Our first art show was a huge turning point. It was our first time letting the public see our work, and the positive feedback and genuine interest were extremely validating.

How do you overcome creative blocks or challenges when working on a project?

Cory: I have to walk away from it and come back when the mood hits me.

Adrian: I just keep going until something happens.

Do you have any favorite tools or materials that you always keep in your paint pouring arsenal? What are they, and why do you love them?

Cory: A hairdryer for Dutch pours.

Adrian: Palette knives for swiping.

Both: Huge push pins to put on the bottom of our paintings. Oh, and painter’s tape.

How do you know when a paint pouring piece is finished? What criteria do you use to evaluate your work?

Cory: It’s a feeling for me. Oftentimes, I ask Adrian for his opinion. But typically, I look at it and pause and see if it feels right.

Adrian: An overall feeling of success or failure when I look at the piece. Either feeling makes me stop.

What advice would you give to aspiring paint pouring artists who are just starting out?

Cory: Don’t be afraid of things getting messy. Paint is going to get on things. Just breathe through it and let it flow.

Adrian: Try not to compare yourself to other artists. Remember that there are billions of people on the planet, and there will always be someone who loves your work.

Are there any upcoming projects, exhibitions, or collaborations you’re excited about and would like to share with our readers?

Right now, we’re prepping for The King’s Drive Artwalk in Charlotte, NC. It’s a two-day art event, and we are both nervous and excited. We also have a collaboration with Michelle, aka Bella, from Royal River Art in June. We’re going to explore the chain-pulling technique together.

Lastly, where can we find more of your work or connect with you online?
